It was because an inept sys-admin (me) was working outside his comfort zone. The WORD document I initially wanted to print DID (in docx format) and so did several others! PROBLEM SOLVED. One of the Apple Support people suggested completely wiping out that list (right click in the list of printers and choosing 'reset'. That may have gibbeled something in the internals of the 'list of printers available on my computer'. the HP installer was smart enough to see a first printer of the same type, so it so appended a 2 to its name and finished the install.

Goes back to the first download of newest printer driver and related software I did just after the first download and install of Big Sur. Otherwise, close out of the Printers & Scanners window.I worked with Apple for a couple of hours today and got the printer snafu solved.

If you wish to set the printer you just added as the default printer, you can select it from the Default Printer drop-down list.

The printer will install and will appear in your list of printers in the Printers & Scanners preferences.

Most departmental Canons are model 4725/4735. Note, for the Canon Multi-function devices, you will need to know the model of the Canon for this step. For example, for a Canon 4735, type 4735 in the search field.

To narrow the list, type the model number in the search field in the upper right corner.

For example, PRINTCANON1-TE201-CANON would indicate a Canon printer located in TE 201.

That should be listed in the name field ( SERVER-ROOM#-MODEL).

Select the software for the Make and Model of the printer.

In the Use section, click Choose a Driver.

Available settings depend on the app you are printing from, the print job type. Select your printer, and then select print job settings such as paper size, number of copies, and page range. Scroll down the screen and select Print from the list of options.

When you select the printer, the Name and Location fields will fill automatically. Open the item you want to print, and then tap the Share icon ( or ), or the menu icon.

To narrow the list, type the building and room number (with no spaces) of the room where the printer is located in the search field in the upper right corner, e.g.

In the Default tab, select the printer you want to install.

You may have to unlock the screen by clicking on the lock in the bottom left corner with your Mac Admin credentials.

Below the printer list on the left side pane, click the symbol.

Click Show All(nine dots) to the right of the keys.

If you do not see a row of icons, you may have a preference window already open.

Choose Printers & Scanners in the second row of icons.

Open System Preferences by clicking the icon in the Dock or by clicking the Apple Menu and choosing System Preferences.

Before installing a Canon 4735 please go to Self Service and install the Canon Universal Printer Driver.
